Battle of amity station: orbital destroyed, fleets mauled

BATTLE OF AMITY STATION: ORBITAL DESTROYED, FLEETS MAULED

Reporting directly from the frontlines, GNN war correspondent Karim Iftar, embedded with the Grand Republique’s 1st Strike Group De Gaulle aboard the RSS Marat, is calling last cycle’s battle over Amity Station colony the bloodiest single engagement of the war so far. We bring you the latest live from the scene of the engagement.

Allied LGR and CASI battle squadrons translated into Amity Station orbit yesterday to challenge the Alarian Imperium squadron Hammer of Alaria under Commodore Vassilev. The LGR squadron 1st Strike Group De Gaulle and the CASI squadron under Fleet Admiral Tessavine 7Clarity closed at full burn, expecting a swift envelopment of the outnumbered Imperials.

Against expectations the Alarian fleet chose to stay and fight despite the odds. The Alarian squadron accelerated at flank speed towards the hostile formation, reports Iftar. The two fleets launched interceptor squadrons, with Amity’s now commandeered orbital station launching their own squadrons in support of the Alarian defence effort. Aboard the bridge of the Marat, Iftar witnessed the moment of professional shock as LGR fire control officers detected civilian transports massed and following the Alarian fleet, corralled by shadowing escorts.

Imperium vessels suffered heavy damage as LGR long range ordnance struck home, with leading capital ship ISS Indestructible taking the brunt. Abruptly, the Alarian fleet slowed, allowing the civilian mass to pass - apparently driven by the threat of imperial escort ships taking up their rear.

The great spill of fleeing civilian freighter traffic, now flagged as refugee transports, overtook the Alarian fleet and filled the engagement zone. Many broke for safety, several pressed ahead aiming for gaps in the allied LGR and CASI formations. LGR naval commanders limited their fire in an effort to avoid striking the civilian transports in the crossfire in an effort to allow the ships to pass. GNN’s Karim Iftar captured the flood of civilian comms traffic, some pleading for ceasefire, others simply screaming into the void as their ships were engulfed in flame.

Alarian commanders intensified their fire, hammering the flanking CASI squadron, who had reduced their fire in the face of the civilian mass. Republican and CASI gunners held their fire on the refugee column for the critical seconds it took to resolve the ambiguity. Allied pacifiers moved to shield the transports, intercept the ordnance and escort vessels from the danger zone. Just as the leading refugee ships filtered through the allied formation, several of the transports erupted in massive explosions, impacting the allied squadron and causing massive damage.

Karim Iftar, on the bridge of the Marat, witnessed the carrier CSS Unification take a direct kamikaze strike through its forward flight deck which was later reported drifting and unrecoverable. Her sister ships, heavy cruisers CSS Bastion and CSS Fusion, were crippled in the same exchange, with all three vessels now under tow and CASI sources confirming that scuttling is being seriously considered rather than the long return to a Sector 001 yard.

In the chaotic moments after the attack, above the alarms and shouts of pain, a clear command over the allied channel broke through the chatter “all allied ships - fire at will”. In moments, the refugee ships heading for the allied lines were destroyed, several broke into giant explosive bouts of plasma, many more simply and silently vented into space - as two more made contact and achieved significant damage to CASI vessels.

As the orbital engagement reached its final critical phase, with LGR forces gaining the upper hand, Alarian command signalled the withdrawal, simultaneously activating previously laid demolition charges throughout the Amity Station arcology.

The vast structure broke apart over the course of several hours, with the trade port, diplomatic concourse and dorsal boom shearing away and beginning the long burn into the atmosphere below. Most of the station’s civilian population had evacuated to the surface in the days preceding the battle, with LGR authorities reporting heavy casualties. A smaller refugee contingent, mixed deliberately with the Alarian fire ship deployment, was destroyed almost in its entirety in the orbital exchange. Initial estimates of civilian dead range into the low thousands, with LGR and CASI commanders facing immediate and pointed questions about engagement protocols.

Strike Group De Gaulle suffered heavy damage and withdrawal from the system for an extended refit is expected. The Hammer of Alaria broke contact with two of its heavy cruisers disabled and without main drive power. Crews belonging to the ISS Indestructible II and the ISS Conqueror managed to reach escape pods and have since been recovered, whilst many reached the planet below. The remainder of the imperial squadron broke orbit and are reportedly limping back toward Imperial repair yards where the squadron is likely to be out of action for the foreseeable future, sources indicate.

The Alarian Imperium’s Ashborn Legion ground division remains on the surface, now without orbital cover, without resupply, and surrounded by an LGR civilian population that has just watched their lifeline break apart in the sky above them. Imperial Sector Command has not yet responded to repeated requests for comment on the legion’s situation. “We held the line,” one anonymous LGR petty officer told a GNN correspondent. “We held it, and now there is nothing left to hold.”

The horror unleashed in orbit was reflected on the ground. Medicin Sans Frontieres have released unsettling images of the civilian casualties in an apparent atrocity on the Alarian occupied world. Alarian marines appear to have mistaken a camera for a weapon, causing the detachment to open fire on unarmed civilians in the Linar District of Amity Station.

Sector 005’s NEMEX 500 fell suddenly on the news of the destruction of the orbital. Interstellar shipping houses and insurance markets are reeling, with insurance rates skyrocketing as the economic impacts of the war finally hit. Experts warn of immediate recession and increased barriers to trade. Diplomatic officials across major polities have near universally issued statements of condolence over the grievous civilian losses suffered.

Concern of Cerean financial commitments

Concern of Cerean financial commitments

The Cerean Planetary Alliance has failed to pay its support dues for the Unity 5 coalition, sources say. A recent financial audit undertaken by the new secretariat of the international coalition identifies both the CPA and Vertinians as having missed payments two years in a row since signing the treaty establishing the new organisation.

A Vertinian official responding to GNN’s request for comment suggest the payment issues were due to bureaucratic problems. Meanwhile, CPA official Admiral Isolda Oremaster when approached for interview briskly walked in the opposite direction as CPA PR chief, Agristair Rambellstone, approached remarking “There must be some issue with the secretariat’s accounting, they are new on the job after all. The Alliance stands firmly for a constructive peace in the sector, and part of that will be achieved through institutions such as Unity 5.”

Meanwhile, construction on the new orbital over Parliament proceeds at pace. The new state of the art structure, designed in partnership with El’lyran run Typhon Arcology Design Syndicate will host a specially designed diplomatic assembly and conference area.

Empress Declares AFCO “Terror Sponsor State”

Empress Declares AFCO “Terror Sponsor State”

The Court of Empress Alaria VI has issued an Imperial Decree from Alioth designating the Association of Free Colonies a Terrorist Sponsoring State, in response to AFCO’s shock confession at last cycle’s diplomatic summit of having funded the White Hand within Sector 005. The proclamation, the first time in living memory the Empress has applied her personal seal to a designation of this kind, demands the surrender of named key persons involved in the funding network, a public and personal acknowledgement by Sector President Tang of his administration’s sponsorship of terror, and reparations paid into an Imperial fund for the bereaved and maimed.

The Empress called the demands “a minimum threshold” that “shall not be withdrawn”, and addressed neutral powers in pointed terms: “Any state which now extends to AFCO the courtesies due a member in good standing of the galactic community extends them to a state that treats in murder by proxy.”

The imperium’s new allies appear taken aback by the pronouncement. The Federation Chancellery on Earth declined to comment to GNN. Sources close to Earth senior officials expressed concern at a possible spiralling situation in S5. GNN defence correspondent Lira Vassenka observed that “what an Empress says publicly and what an Empress permits privately are not always the same document. First Child Ashborn will been given private orders. We will know what they contain when we see what he does, in his usual formidable manner.” AFCO has not yet issued an official response.

GNN can confirm multiple AFCO public figures and prominent citizens residing within Alarian territory across human space have been referred to the imperial PROTECT counter extremism programme following the announcement.

Sector President Tang to face leadership challenge

Sector President Tang to face leadership challenge

Protests have rocked the Free Colonies’ Sector Capital on Dalek following Tang’s shock revelation. President W. Tang made the statement in last cycle’s Sector 005 diplomatic summit, boldly standing by their claim to have supported and directly funded the White Hand movement, confirming his government’s role in funding militant groups within the Alarian Imperium.

Initial responses by Sector Governors attempted to clarify Tang’s position in an apparent attempt to allow the Sector President to row back on their statement. Tang held firm, claiming his government must speak the truth on the issue and hold the line against Alarian imperialism. Tang stated the assembled nations were walking into a highly calibrated Alarian trap.

The Alarian government cited the Sector President’s comments as clear and direct evidence for their recent measures and strategy. Families of the victims, together with the First Child and assembled members of the Alarian government, paid tribute to those lost during the tragic attacks last cycle at a special memorial service on Gloriana. A national day of mourning has been announced across the entire Alarian Imperium for next cycle.

Despite the approval of the Tang government’s recent arrests of key figures by AFCO chief justices, civil unrest on Dalek and neighbouring worlds is growing. Madeleine Varn, Planetary Governor of Force Six has called for an emergency session of the S5 Sector Association Council. With rising tensions across the sector, popular unrest at home and economic recession gripping key AFCO holdings, experts say Tang is expected to come under intense scrutiny from the SAC and may even face a leadership challenge.

AFCO Sector Association Council

AFCO Sector Association Council (SAC)

The Association Council, a body composed of the elected planetary governors of AFCO colonies, is the primary ruling body of the Association of Free Colonies in each sector.

Whilst in session, the Council can discuss and set sector wide policy, review and audit AFCO state finances, scrutinise key sector appointments and elect a Sector President from among their number.

Each Planetary Governor within the AFCO system is a powerful entity in their own right, with each colony effectively autonomous on all policy areas besides reserved matters, such as common defence and foreign policy - and each Sector Association Council is in turn autonomous in their own right within the wider AFCO governance structure.

Shigetaki dispatched to Sector 005

Shigetaki dispatched to Sector 005

Agent of the Proximan Parliament, Commissioner Shigetaki was recently dispatched to Sector 005 amidst the ongoing tensions and hostilities in the sector. GNN reporter Kara Stuart spoke with Dr Lance Prevaris, Chief Executive of international conflict monitoring NGO Antares Observatory Organisation on the changes, who remarked “this shows the Proximan Parliament are perhaps weighing the role of this fringe sector more heavily in their estimations”. Terran holocaster Samira Ibn Menika questioned the motives of the appointment on her show last week, saying “is Shigetaki just another of PFR’s Man on the Spot?”

Dross talks to go ahead as animal rights protests grow

Dross talks to go ahead as animal rights protests grow

The Vertinia Commonwealth’s coordinated welcome campaign for newly arrived representative Kenz Juba has rolled out across Dross holonet channels this week, framed as a celebration of the planet’s biodiversity and a public commitment to work alongside Vertex Colonial Group and local animal welfare voices in shaping the future of the Megavox programme. The campaign leans heavily on VCW’s recent collaborative work with SILK biomedical teams on the PAX4 Nimvy vaccine, which passed human trials last cycle. Footage of Vertinia’s protected wetlands and xenobotanical research stations is interwoven with conservation talking heads and holosegments showing Juba in markets, schools and at the perimeter of the largest Megavox enclosure, all intercut with close-ups of the animals themselves. Juba has been received on the planet as a public figure of considerable standing, mobbed at one settlement, given honorary status by a Dross cultural association at another, and treated by local holocasters as the celebrity arrival of the cycle.

Moderate animal welfare opinion has responded with similar warmth, with several sector-spanning conservation groups signing on to support the Vertinian Commonwealth’s stated programme of advancing Megavox welfare and Moon Weaver vidstar k2XZO going live on XZO Live and Raw to declare the Vertinian arrival “the first grown-ups in the room on this deeply sad story”. The Seekers Commonwealth has separately confirmed the dispatch of Kiranpeace Har to mediate between the Commonwealth, the Dross colonist community and Vertex Colonial Group, an appointment widely read across the sector as constructive. A VCG statement noted the company “welcomes constructive engagement from all parties.”

Reception within VCW civil society itself, however, has been considerably less collegial. The radical animal rights movement Anima, long a thorn in the side of a state otherwise known for its staunch animal welfare credentials, has staged protests on Kedros this week accusing Chief Aylen Winterglow of cosying up to corporate interests and demanding the public release of her personal financial records, with VCW Interior Ministry sources warning that Anima has separately dispatched activists to Dross. The Megavox themselves were unavailable for comment.

Seekers move to secure Venta

Seekers move to secure Venta

A Seeker Battle Squadron has taken up high orbit over the plains of the northern desert region. The squadron has dispatched forces to secure the extraction site previously visited by CPA survey vessels, and initially excavated by Federation forces. Local so-called “neo-hippy” tribes people were warned away from the region, which usually forms part of their annual migration to visit their ancestral spirits. Local armed buggies, which constitute the bulk of defence forces for the Northern Democratic Colonial Authority (NDCA) in the area watched on as Seeker vessels and starfighters swarmed on the area.

Meanwhile, Chairperson Menelly Perat has announced large scale infrastructure investment across the NDCA, which, she says “will benefit all of our colonists and secure our position as the prime mover on this planet”. Dawnstar Colony officials were not available for comment.

Riker II “Failed State” claims Terran Federation

Riker II “Failed State” claims Terran Federation

Federation Fleet Admiral Skarsgård, speaking to GNN war correspondent Dezsovo Mondák aboard the FSS Franklin, has bluntly described the situation on Riker II as “a quagmire” and the planet itself as “a failed state.” His remarks come as the formal LGR ground presence on Riker effectively ceases to exist, ground down across recent cycles by the absence of resupply since the destruction of the LGR troop transports in orbit and by the persistent harassment of Federation pacifier squadrons operating from the orbiting fleet. What surviving individual elements remain of the LGR Ground Force Division have, GNN understands, slipped out of Rikerian Empire territory and folded into the regular military of the neighbouring Algeron Republic under the operational coordination of LGR Military Secretary Wun Punch, who remains at large.

The Algeron Republic, though its regular military is rated as little more than a local defence force by galactic standards, has taken a notably more assertive posture in response, openly integrating LGR advisors and erecting defensive cordons around the main city of Imzadi. The LGR-aligned Rikerian Republican Triumvirate, now operating openly as a government in exile from Algeronian-controlled territory, continues to issue communiqués bearing the seals of Babooth, Hooch and Rewbell, and has effectively dared the Federation to widen the war by striking civilian areas within the Algeron Republic itself. Federation officials have so far stopped short of doing so, though Terran Starship Marines deployed from the FSS Franklin and associated fleet elements have conducted strike and raid operations against identified surviving LGR formations on both sides of the Algeron-Riker border.

Within Rikerian Empire territory itself, a parallel and confused political process has begun. Local Rikerian leaders, including a number of formerly loyal military officers who refused to follow Grand Marshal Loseer’s last defence of Beard, have begun coalescing under a newly declared Riker Provisional Authority (RPA), broadcasting appeals for calm and attempting to pull surviving elements of the old imperial elite into a single administrative spine. With the formal LGR military presence on Riker now effectively spent, an LGR-aligned insurgency has emerged in its place, striking RPA safehouses, former imperial security personnel and any Rikerian figure perceived as collaborating with the Federation, with civilian casualties mounting in cities the old regime once tightly policed. GNN understands that the Federation has reached an accord with the RPA to reduce the risk of friendly fire incidents during ongoing Marine raids, an arrangement UTF officials were unwilling to characterise on the record.

Wun Punch has emerged as the de facto coordinator of what LGR holonet broadcasts now describe as a “combined republican resistance”. In a defiant broadcast intercepted and rebroadcast across the sector, the resistance leader declared that any attempted landing of UTF ground forces in republican territory “will be met with republican fury, and with vengeance for the loss of our comrades.” Whether that vow will be put to the test is a question the Federation will, sooner or later, have to test.

Terrans claim Riker “liberated”

In parallel with its military operations, the UTF has rolled out a coordinated sector-wide media campaign branded “Liberated Riker,” circulating footage of RPA Acting Governor Riza Tahari, a former Imperial general who broke with Grand Marshal Loseer in the closing stages of the LGR occupation, telling viewers that “the Republicans did not bring liberation to Riker, they brought their puppet Triumvirate and the cells that now murder our neighbours in the street.” Sector Governor Prem Sheev, framing the campaign as a counter to “the imperialist mythology of the Grande Republique and its accomplices,” cited the appearance of military-grade weaponry in White Hand atrocities as evidence that “a polity is, in plain sight, sponsoring terrorist atrocities,” and called on “those who love peace, justice and freedom on every Unity 5 world” to demand AFCO’s expulsion from the Unity 5 alliance.

Proximan Unity Front leader Lando Morris told independent network MorningStar that “we will not be lectured on anti-imperialism by a Federation embroiled in an expansionist war, but we will also not pretend the Grande Republique came to Riker as liberators.” SILK Department of Contact representatives declined to comment publicly, though sources confirm a lengthy private holocall between SILKon-the-fence “Maureen” 14 of 17 and the UTF mission on Henge later the same evening.

Knights of alaria claim responsibility for attacks on foreign citizens

KNIGHTS OF ALARIA CLAIM RESPONSIBILITY FOR ATTACKS ON FOREIGN CITIZENS

Responding to the violent bombing campaign of 2601 carried out by the AFCO-backed White Hand, militant group Knights of Alaria have claimed responsibility for a spate of violent attacks on foreign citizens. VCW, AFCO and SILK citizens were targeted in an outburst of violence, leaving 1 dead, thirteen critically injured and dozens suffering grievous wounds. The attacks appear to be semi-random, experts say, though some question whether the Alarian state is funding the pro-imperium group.

The Knights of Alaria published a manifesto on the holonet claiming to represent a “True and Pure Alaria, free from the influence of degenerate and malign corruptors”, calling for mass deportation of foreign citizens and all migrants, legal or illegal”.

Sector 5 heading for major recession

SECTOR 5 HEADING FOR MAJOR RECESSION

SKC based Rowntree Economics Institute has this week published their annual assessment of economic activity across Sector 005. The report highlights significant economic impacts across multiple states from compounding factors, namely the ongoing Alarian-Terran war on LGR, the bionid resurgence on Andor and the NIMVY viral outbreak.

Combined with recent events in the Amity Station system and spiking costs of trade, experts across the sector are now, for the first time in a decade, warning of an immediate recession if action is not taken. Jatee Damon, head of Free Colonies megabank FordexKP notes his earlier fears have manifested, the recent period of favourable market conditions has ended, ushering in a likely recession with severe consequences across the sector and wider human space.

However, whether it’s because of their new Halcyon Hospitality Bureaus, the new VC-wide network of specialist resorts, or due a generalised increase in spiritual followers (and donors) across human space, the Viśvanivāsaḥ Confederacy are experiencing an economic boom period. Several high ranking public figures from across Sector 005 and beyond were eager with anticipation for the launch of the new resorts and were the first to taste the height of relaxation and pleasure offered by the new resorts. Despite strong indicators of a growing economic recession in the wider sector economy, the VC appear to have weathered the storm.

The general economic downturn, which is likely to further suppress demand and economic activity, has hit several states harder than others, with the Association of Free Colonies and Vertinia deeply affected. Vertinia and SILK both suffered at the hands of the deadly Nimvy virus, whilst the ongoing war between the UTF, AI and LGR has suppressed economic activity across much of the sector.

Food prices spike after pirate attacks

FOOD PRICES SPIKE AFTER PIRATE ATTACKS

Cargo hauling companies report massive losses after pirate attacks target grain shipments heading for Dalek.

Piracy expert Professor Y’ah Mee-Hartese suggests we may be witnessing the development of new pirate groups, taking advantage of distracted and deployed military forces across the sector, usually deployed for anti piracy operations.

Local AFCO investigations are underway in an effort to determine the provenance and identity of the pirate group. SKC officials interviewed noted the unusual change in pattern for the pirate group, with piracy in recent years affecting the more sparsely populated rimward and trailing areas of the sector, NE, E, SE scouting sectors.

Outer rim alliance dignitaries mark the anniversary of the battle of pelos

OUTER RIM ALLIANCE DIGNITARIES MARK THE ANNIVERSARY OF THE BATTLE OF PELOS

Marking the 80th anniversary of the final victory of the Outer Rim Alliance against the breakaway Free Colonies of Pell, officials from across the sector and wider human settled space (HSS) joined the ORA in marking the occasion.

The Battle of Pelos IV in 2522 saw the ORA win a decisive Alliance victory. As part of the decade long low level conflict between the Alliance and the upstart newly politically unified grouping of independent worlds in Sector 003.

Long under the sway of the ORA and having thrived from years of investment from the neighbouring state, the situation turned sour with the rise of influential populist leader Deng Xi Marrak. Deng’s popular movement split the formerly ORA aligned colonies in a call for independence from the “imperialist” ORA. Deng’s popularity rose after the independent worlds of the region joined the Outer Rim Unified Market, a regional free trade, free movement and tariff free zone, which sparked friction with the long established independent colonists. Deng-aligned governments gained power and pursued a new so-called Non-Aligned Path, exiting their membership of the new economic union. Not long afterwards skirmishes and war broke out over trade rights, leading to ORA factions pushing for the forced accession of the former ORUM member worlds.

Small protests and vigils have been held by Independence groups across the former Free Colonies of Pell.

Bluto to charm sector 5 in new tour

BLUTO TO CHARM SECTOR 5 IN NEW TOUR

PFR holonet star Bluto Charms, who released the Fivervision Song Contest semi-finalist track two years ago, has announced a new gig tour of the sector.

In an act holobloggers have labelled “unsporting”, Bluto Charms took to the megaconcert circuit with a new album whilst LO0zY was famously forced to cancel her own tour after contracting the NIMVY virus on a pre-tour visit to Sector 005.

With LO0zY out of the picture, Bluto Charms went on to nab the top spot on holonet records across the verse in a tour spanning multiple sectors. Regardless, Bluto’s new album went viral across S5 in a feat that will net the holostar billions in credits. In an effort to recoup public image lost in the act opposing fans are calling the “usurping”, the Proximan born vocalist is committed to investing large sums to those colonies hosting her new gigs.

Nssf implant removal successful

NSSF IMPLANT REMOVAL SUCCESSFUL

The New Star Socialist Federation has claimed victory over the forces of “barbaric capitalist science”, following success in new trials to test enhanced methods for removal of CASI cybernetic implants.

The McDoolist state, still embroiled in a bitter civil war with CASI loyalist forces, has exerted significant efforts to remove the implants, GNN understands. Whilst stalwart in defence of transhumanist values, the new state born from a catastrophic cyber glitch remarks their primary concern is the threat vector the implants pose. NSSF Chancellor Ceka Thälmann said earlier this week “we’ve all got them, we can still hear the voices. But the fact is, we cannot control them. We do not truly understand if they are secure or the threat they pose. The successful trials are a major step forward and prove the superiority of McDoolist Thought.

This has been GNN, live from Sector 005. Bringing you news from across the Verse, as it happens.
